I always joke that we could run a country, dAmboise said. You really need to build equity and build trust especially in the Midwest youve. Like the Kees, you're going to hopefully be doing something you love with people you love and working your butt off, but there are expectations. John: Hey, Peter. This is a super special edition. This kind of like, "Why are we looking at other people's metrics? Michael Red: So, I did some research and so, the sources got back to me. John: It looks amazing. When you are visioning this out, like you just said, human capital, a new physical capital, on the court, off the court, what were you using both singularly as you, as Peter Feigin goes, but also with your partners and the private equity guys, what were you using as your role model? What has it meant to you to bet on yourself? "We didn't have much time," he says. And I think it was like a checkpoint for us certainly, but for the whole country on like, "Boy, this is one of those inflection points that we've got to make matter in a big way." Well the goal on the court is we want to win a championship. You miss falling on the ground, Dan Feigin said. By the way I never wouldve said this seven years ago, I think you have to be involved. But I'm sure [inaudible 00:30:10] the players in that process. And our expectations are to consistently improve and grow as a business and consistently improve on the court and vie for a championship. Everythings got to be perfect to do it and dont realize because like, hey, Ive never won a championship before, never run a ring so I just started the process and I didnt realize which I now do and why our owners wanted to be intimately involved with the design of the ring. So, these guys are thrown into a world where they're responsible for everything, they assume they know everything, and what their experience is. I can come up with a solution, we can figure it out somehow, some way if youve got the right people around you to do it. And if a new player does not endear himself to the group, it tends to reflect poorly on whoever invited him in the first place. Peter Feigin: Well, Mr. Red, it's kind of for naught, I'd do anything for you, so this is an easy period of time. Peter Feigin: They're like, "Peter, don't double think anything. Thats and like you said, you get to share that with all the hundreds of other rings. I will say one of the big advantages of the national basketball association is it truly is a collaborative, like on the court we are competitive. Msgr. So, I might have caught myself parking in that situation a couple of times as well and he's starting to document it, that I was a hypocrite. You miss making a game-winning shot. We have the DNA and the strength and this caliber of championship caliber team to really be attractive to the world. So, for people who run businesses, to have an operator who's really geared up and wants to drive revenue is kind of like a positive thing, especially for Mark and Wes. If you have a partner in life, they'd better be a teammate. I always think it comes back. Im so proud and honored to have this conversation with you today, and thank you for your generosity of your time. How do you care about it, and Jon Horst is so great on the basketball side. We're going to build it locally, regionally, nationally and then internationally. Michael Red: It's been wonderful to watch. If you lose, that might mean you need to keep an eye on several of your friends toddlers. We call it volundeering. It just kind of really trying. Then, I would literally leech myself. She's a teacher. Like you said at the top of the show, very few human beings even get to be in this position in any professional sports level. Peter Feigin: So, my job is pretty simple, like how do I build the trust with them? John: Your mom was part of the George Lois generation and Jerry Della Femina and then Donny Deutschs father David Deutsch. But that kind of thing. Peter Feigin: I think nobody could have imagined what that does to you on a personal psychological emotional level. John: Now, you married, what, wife is a native New Yorker? Those are all things that are kind of seemed simple, but not done all the time. Peter: That was the Milwaukee Bucks. Peter is a serious businessman and a hilarious friend. Well, I think again, it kind of goes back to we thought we were this awakened organization because our percentages looked good. You can always have free coffee. How do we attack every day with how can we resource everybody who works here to be able to do their job very well. But you got to remember, there's the rest of the neighborhood and we've got to continue to focus on the task at hand. Because I hadnt worked in, Id worked in New York city. The whole world is on that balance, so part of what we haven't really talked about much is our culture here. Peter Feigin, president of the National Basketball Association's Milwaukee Bucks and Fiserv Forum since 2014, graduated from Franklin & Marshall in 1992 as an American studies major. Got it. But it was one of these kind of diversion life lessons that you don't know where life takes you and just take total opportunity for it. Peter: Yeah, what really worked for me is I think I was just insatiably curious. You got into really like, "How do we create resources for people to just talk about how they're feeling, about how they vent, about how do they get support for their lives?" By the way, I've got access to the Team President, the GM, everybody is all around just to resource and help. And more importantly, kind of like building such a strong infrastructure with other people. That's right. This was just the very beginning, the first thought was, "Oh, boy. So, for us, it goes back to constantly being really honest and forthright about where you are and how you can improve. And the family went into the most unique times that we've ever seen in our lifetime a year ago. And at the core, I've always been a sales and marketing guy. Id worked for the New York Knicks. The future for the Bucks, championship, championship, championship, and obviously getting fans back at the games. It's kind of like the joy of, like I said, I was a rough athlete compared to the Olympian and All-Star I'm talking to. Antetokounmpo signed a four-year, $100 million extension in September 2016 (right before his first All-Star season) that will keep him under contract in Milwaukee through 2020-21. Where does your ring sit? Thats good. I understood what a call to action was. Peter Feigin: And how we almost flaunt it in a good way and it's kind of easy. Peter Feigin: Yeah. Michael Red: I don't know if that's the responsibility of the organization to have that permeate throughout the city, but have you seen a shift in Milwaukee, even when it comes to people coming together from different races and different creeds? Peter: Im fairly, my mom was immersed in data analytics before data and analytics was business intelligence. The most meaningful thing that you can never take for granted is we gave about 850 part-time workers rings to get done. Sometimes it goes up for judicial review to make sure the run is harmonious, Lee said. When Lee was shooting his film The Best Man, he brought the actors Taye Diggs and Morris Chestnut to the gym. Peter: administration, in aviation, in a $3 billion international aviation company, which was just amazing. We're going to have systematic plans that last years instead of events or days or months, and we're going to, we're committed.". Just what you said is like were always coming in this balance of how do we, we want Giannis to represent the Bucks brand. But yet, still being leaders with more than a vote movement, just amazing, amazing. He thinks hes going to sell the team. Low and behold 24 hours, called him back and I said, oh, hes going to sell the team. We deal, and weve had some meetings with our friends at the Badgers of the University of Wisconsin as they create a collective, weve certainly been tracking kind of whats going on. Growing up, you used to hang out, go to the garden and you were a Knicks fan or Rangers fan and Yankees or Mets. I'm like, "I don't know. It is a really tough existence. There's no business." And I believe in my heart that the Bucks were real leaders in that moment. He perpetuates a culture that attracts like-minded people to him. I've been telling him. Youve collected all this human capital, both starting and back up. We were either 29th or 30th in a league of 30 teams, we were in a 25-year-old arena, that part of this was how do we get a new arena built? What you do is you submarine the entire process into yourself. What the heck do we do, like everybody else? Thats just my view, Lasry said. Peter: You are doing your employees, your service, your limited partners so it is a huge process. His is a story of grit, will, and great humor. Im probably like someone who gives everything away. The Run also often doubles as a day care. John: Another native New Yorker from Roslyn, New York. Peter: Probably, now with the way interesting curriculum has expanded and fun case studies and like where schools are. You are in a community thats not only sports crazy, but very community minded, the Packers, the Badgers, the Bucks are all very community involved. Were you looking at other franchises that have done this before, or were you looking at other business models and merging some version thereof? Engage is a digital booking platform. In business it takes a real challenging of like where your growth is going to come from I in a big way. Ive been really lucky. How exhausting was the bubble? Malcolm D. Lee, who is directing Space Jam 2, which stars LeBron James, is one of the regulars in The Run. I don't know how to talk about that other than like my dad was like my hero and he was selfless and kind of quietly just did anything for anybody and kind of was like that's how I had value for him. I literally said, "Hey, Giannis, do me a favor. How do we think about marketing around the world? Because are they getting too sophisticated too early in terms of their value enterprise? Feigin got the funding approved in the next couple months, and the Bucks signed a 30-year lease to stay in Milwaukee. I think if nothing else, it changes the awareness, the sophistication, and the business operations of the way players will position themselves and the way theyll market themselves. Peter: it worked in such a great way for me and with a magic wand really evolved into one of the most incredible jobs ever. So, we see this great opportunity to lead by example and then to almost market and promote it as this should be more the norm than not the norm in a big way. I know youve said your pops passed. Peter Feigin: This is where I want to be. Talk about that relationship that you have with the players. And I think he's going to sell the team. You were very part of that whole Marquis Jet, NetJet thing too, right? Peter: which I cant even believe it, Id probably have some fun teaching. Peter Feigin: Yeah, so those are two great questions. Talk a little bit on a fun topic, when I was reading up about you and the team and everything else, I read about this new venture you guys got going over in Wisconsin called the Cluckery and I got hungry looking at the website and looking at the menu. But he worries about the physical effects of another extended layoff. And Khris parks in a handicap space, because five minutes he's in. They called themselves The Magic Three as middle school teammates on the Upper East Side. Okay. Every Wednesday, Dan Feigin, now the director of Trevors Upper School on the Upper East Side, sends a mass email to determine who will be playing that weekend. Does he play defense?. And my brother said, "Oh, my God. And to think it all started at a private school in New York City. Youve got Wes Edens who has probably started up dozens of companies in private equity and has an unbelievable kind of entrepreneurial spirit. And we skewed higher than most NBA teams. They have been through a system, if nothing else, highly competitive basketball for the last 12, 14 years, including kind of being shelled up in college, and what the pros are. I've known Jon for, I don't know, 13, 14 years, and to see what he's done with the team as the general manager has been really impressive. Whether it's police reform, whether it's incarceration, whether it's education, whether it's food desert. How do we change the model, and really put new metrics out there, for us to get it? In the middle of New York and your, John: You knew you wanted to be a business person when you went to. Peter Feigin: Michael, like I said, anytime, anywhere. Just my own exposure was mixed in what are best practices for centralized services. John: Talking about teaching, we have 15 years of this podcast, so we have thousands of young people around the world that actually tune in and listen and when we have someone like you on, Id like to ask you this. Peter Feigin has been the President of the Milwaukee Bucks since October 2014. Peter: Well, I think first of all, everything is like, you plan to be great. How could it be?" Where were you on sports? I have an identical twin brother who happens to still be in New York and runs a private school called Trevor Day School. You start with whats the goal? Talk about that balance between what you do with Milwaukee and obviously, with your family, right? How do we build the baselines? Now, the lockdown has forced some of The Runs longstanding members to confront their athletic mortality. And that's tough, too. John: Go back over that, what it was called typically whats called web3 now, or something the young people around me tell me its called web 3.0 NFTs, crypto sports gambling. Michael Red: I know the whole organization showed a ton of grit from ownership to yourself, to management and players, even losing the Democratic National Convention last year. In July 2015, Feigin basically introduced himself to Wisconsin lawmakers with a stark proposal: If $250 million in public funding was not approved -- Edens, Lasry, third owner Jamie Dinan and Kohl had already combined to put up $250 million) -- the NBA would exercise its right to buy back the Bucks from the new ownership group for $25 million more than it had paid Kohl. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's part of the culture and kind of down from ownership, like you're going to stand for something or you're going to stand for nothing. At the backdrop of the luncheon were items invented by African Americans. She couldn't be more supporting from everything. The Bucks are currently in position to make the playoffs for the second straight year and third time in four years since Feigin and friends took over. What would you be doing if you just couldnt be doing this? Lasry and Feigin met some 20 years ago when Feigin's identical twin brother, Daniel, was coaching Lasry's sons Alex and Zach for an elementary school basketball team in New York City.. More recently, Tom Kearns, a mental health counselor and one of The Runs longtime staples, has been bringing his 12-year-old daughter, Sophia, so she can shoot hoops on the side with Dan Feigins 12-year-old daughter, Dylan. And I think what happened in this year, in so many ways, was a great splash of ice water thinking like, "Boy, we got a long way to go." "I got to tell you the enthusiasm Peter has brought to the city has been brought right back. Before life as we knew it went on hiatus in March, Peter Feigin was occasionally returning to New York from Milwaukee for weekend visits and to rejoin The Run, which has become multigenerational. Just go beyond the scoreboard and championships that you guys get to make in your community, that you are proud of, Peter. But the Bucks' toughest hit came off the court. Not like how to just excel in basketball. Peter Feigin: So I think we have that balance. Talk about the journey to the Bucks and how did that happen and then why Milwaukee? John: I dont want to skip over that. We are going to put in the notes Peters email address because he was kind enough to give us that. Literally the world, like across European soccer, across everything, for people to at least stop and think. Marc Lasry, the co-owner of the Bucks, joined The Run when his sons were students at Trevor. It is so important that kind of at least in our infrastructure. How could we keep everybody afloat as long as we possibly could? And we want to attract people who want to be in that mode. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I don't know if it's still risk. So, he's at the All-Star game and I literally said, "It's too bad we're not on Zoom," because I'm holding these. Peter Feigin is riding his Peloton bike. In a 10 year phase, I started with a startup with Marquis Jet, with Kenny Dichter and Jesse Itzler who started the business and came from sports. Ive got two kids Im working as, Id say a consultant, helping to put together a business plan. I think probably one of the last public-private partnerships that thatll happen, when Troy brought together the city, the county and the state to put together a partnership for a new arena in downtown Milwaukee. Back when the Feigins (now teenage) sons were much younger, Lasry suspected that Peter or Dan would give them a secret signal to scamper onto the floor if their team was losing. It found him. And really build sports entertainment and residential and commercial around it and really have an urban development company that is fueled by the strength of a brand of an NBA team. And claimed, so before I did it again, I changed the two spots by the testing place to instead of handicap, they now say "Employee of the Month" right on the floor. Ive got the keys to a gym.. "Now we have to monitor and figure out and organize the groups that travel from Greece to away games and organize the meet-and-greets after the game, which by the way, aren't scheduled. And then we kind of sat there until like, "Oh, my God." Michael Red: And this was a decade long process, Peter? I watch it. Well, that's you. We have resources, we back them up, whatever you need, it's part of it. Peter: Yeah, I will just tell you that was one of the most fun dreamlike things for us ever. Before we get talking about all the amazing things you've done in basketball, and just coming off amazing championship. Yes, we are shiny toy people want to see how you build a project in time and under budget and how youd manage a project. It's truly like a restart. And I knew who Arthur Ashe was, but I wasn't a big tennis guy and my job was basically being Arthur Ashe's right hand person through. I think if I had kind of the listening skills that I still need to get better at, I would be better at kind of understanding. How do we affect the community together? You and I go back since you came back to the Bucks or since you came to the Bucks and you guys have been incredible to me over the years since you've been in a position in Milwaukee and really grateful of our friendship over the years and how the organization has welcomed me back to the organization. Its incredible and not many people get to do it, lets be honest, when you get to actually live your dream and go to the top. And kudos to you guys for being cognizant of that. So first of all, the bubble was kind of like so exciting, surreal, and awesome. Number one, were in the middle of COVID. It's like how do we, between us, like as you know. We should put our own definitions and we should continue to improve." Thats the relentless, thats the difference I think of what success is. It was, like you couldn't even, if you had a thousand scenarios, of what the last year could be for the Milwaukee Bucks and what you're kind of thinking about and dealing with, it's just been a pretty incredible ride and ton of emotion. We can expose it as like, "Here, we're the example in Milwaukee." Feigin's first task was evident right away. Peter: Hes was in consumer products. Are you allowed to talk about that, Peter? You start and now talk about the major, like you said, you got a great human capital person, you got a great CFO. There's no living room, there's no central square, there's no big public park kind of in the middle of the city. I asked every good question, every dumb question you could possibly imagine to really learn. Peter Feigin: Yeah, I think it's kind of where is the balance? Michael Red: Talk about the process of redeveloping downtown and one who's so in love with Milwaukee and it's like a second home to me, living there for so many years. Don't talk to me, don't text me, don't come back unless you give me a pair of All-Star socks. And I obviously was kind of like I call myself the Division 3 dream. A, if you werent doing this and I know this is a dream job. Before we started this interview, you took a little break and said, John excuse me for a second because someone very special stopped by.
